Beyond the Room: Mediation via Videoconferencing

Taught by Noam Ebner, Beyond the Room is designed for those interested in exploring how conducting mediation via videoconferencing can equip them to serve their clients better or even expand their business. In it, participants will distinguish between a range of approaches to online dispute resolution currently gaining steam, and zoom in on the practice of videoconferencing based mediation. The workshop will blend lectures with online role plays, in which participants will learn, practice (and create) best practices for online mediation.
Noam Ebner is a professor of negotiation and conflict resolution in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, at Creighton University’s Graduate School. Originally from New York, Noam lived in Israel for many years, dividing his time between his home in Jerusalem, and his teaching, training and
consulting activities in the U.S and through extensive travel and working online. He currently resides outside of Jacksonville, Florida. Noam has practiced as an attorney, negotiator, and mediator at his own Jerusalem-based firm. He has trained mediators for the Israeli court system and has played key roles in several community mediation programs. He has conducted hundreds of workshops on negotiation and conflict resolution for a broad range of private sector industries, governmental agencies, NGOs, universities and non-profits
around the world.

Noam has been involved in Online Dispute Resolution for over a decade, in practice, teaching and research. His work on ODR has been published in Negotiation Journal, Conflict Resolution Quarterly and the International Journal on ODR. He has also developed simulations for teaching and practicing online negotiation and mediation skills.
What you will learn:
• The advantages and challenges of mediating via technology
• The new range of process choices involved in mediating online
• Communication skills in the videoconferencing environment
• Methods for humanizing and warming up the mediation process
• Use of a particular videoconferencing platform for conducting mediation processes
• Security, confidentiality, and ethics
The workshop is intended for participants with a background in mediation (as mediators, advocates, etc.), but no technological background is required. The goal is to create a supportive community of learners helping to develop best practices in this new mediation forum.
