40 Hour Basic Mediation Course

with Child Custody Focus

to the court mediation system.

Mediation is an increasing popular alternative to the traditional adjudication process. Further, it is a process utilized in roughly 90% of Idaho divorces involving children.  Through this course participants will learn the basic skills necessary for a solid foundation in mediation.  Content covered will include communication and listening skills, conflict resolution theory with a neuroscience emphasis, professional ethics, the mediation process and techniques, getting beyond impasse and agreement writing.  Further, topics specifically pertinent to child custody such as psychological issues in separation, divorce and family dynamics, needs of children, family law, including custody and support will also be addressed.  Per Idaho Mediation Association standards, a minimum of 30% of the course will involve active roll playing. Completion of the class will satisfy the basic mediation requirement for placement on the Idaho State Supreme Court’s Child Custody Roster as per Idaho Rules of Family Law Procedure 602 & 603.

INSTRUCTORS: Ann Just has been mediating child custody issues since 1987.  Along with her role as a mediator, Ann was the administrator of Family Court Services for the Seventh Judicial District for 16 years.  She served on the Idaho Supreme Court original Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and later served two terms on the Children and Families in the Court Committee.  Ann’s career also includes a private counseling practice, secondary school counselor, and an assistant professor with the University of Idaho Extension System.  Ann holds a Master’s Degree from University of Idaho in a combined program of counseling & child development.  She has extensive experience as a mediation trainer with emphasis on child development and the effects of transition on the family.

Carol Rodriguez, CPM is an experienced mediator and neuro peak performance specialist.  She graduated summa cum laude from Jones International University with a BBA in global leadership and influence and a MBA in negotiation and conflict management.  She is the mediation services coordinator for Idaho’s largest district court, served on the Idaho Mediation Association board and teaches neuroscience, conflict resolution, nonverbal communication and leadership at Boise State University.  Her associations with some of the world’s top neuroscientists inform her highly successful and cutting-edge approach to mediation.
